Office gift exchange ideas

Make it easy to join, easy to skip, and easy on the budget.

Start with an opt-in

Invite the whole team and make participation optional. Do not ask people to explain why they skip it. A modest budget and a clear deadline help people decide. If you manage the team, avoid treating participation as a sign of team spirit.

Choose a simple theme

A desk-break swap works well: participants can bring something for a coffee break, a short puzzle, or a small desk item. A book swap gives people a reason to share a favorite read. A handmade theme works only if everyone wants to join; making something can take more time than buying it.

Make remote staff part of the plan

Use private links so people can draw from different places. Decide whether postage is included in the budget and allow delivery time. Collect addresses privately only when necessary. Schedule an optional video reveal and let someone open a gift later if the time zone does not work.

Avoid awkward matches

If your group wants to avoid manager/direct-report matches, add both directions as exclusions before drawing. Too many exclusions can leave the tool without a valid draw. Smaller teams may need a shared-pile exchange instead.

Give useful boundaries

Agree whether food or alcohol is suitable before shopping. Encourage gifts that do not need sizes. Keep jokes kind and work appropriate. The organizer should have a plan for a late or missing gift so nobody is left sitting empty-handed.

Should a workplace exchange be compulsory?

No. Invite people to opt in and keep the budget comfortable. Nobody should have to explain why they sit it out.

Put your people in the hat.
