White elephant rules

Unwrap, steal, laugh. Agree on the rules before the first turn.

What everyone brings

Each player brings one wrapped gift within the agreed budget. Decide in advance whether gifts should be useful, silly, secondhand, or a mix. Keep the contents hidden and put all gifts together. White elephant does not need a name draw because players choose from the shared pile.

Pick a turn order

Write numbers on slips and have everyone take one. Player one opens a gift from the pile. Player two can open a new gift or steal the opened gift. When a gift is stolen, the person left without one takes another turn. Continue in number order until everyone has a gift.

Set limits before playing

A simple house rule is that a gift can be stolen twice, then it stays with its holder. Also rule out immediately stealing back the gift just taken from you. Cap each turn at three steals so the game keeps moving. These are suggested house rules, not universal rules; choose your version before anyone opens a gift.

Give player one a fair finish

After the last numbered turn, you can let player one swap with an unfrozen gift. If you use this rule, announce it at the start. End after that swap so the game has a clear finish.

Keep it comfortable

Let people decline a steal without being teased. Avoid gifts based on someone’s body, religion, or private life. For younger children, a simple choose-and-unwrap version is often easier than stealing.

Is white elephant the same as Secret Santa?

No. In Secret Santa, you buy for an assigned person. In white elephant, everyone brings a wrapped gift to a shared pile.
